Revitalizing History
Modern Wedding Venue Design at 1896 St. James Place in Milwaukee, WI
I had the incredible privilege of partnering closely with the owner of a beloved historic landmark, breathing new life into its walls by transforming it into an elevated wedding venue that gracefully fuses heritage with modern-day elegance. What began as a sacred space with deep architectural roots became a multi-faceted destination for celebration, where every corner tells a story and every detail invites guests into a world of timeless romance.
Inspired by the client’s travels to London, we infused the design with a sense of classic British sophistication—a nod to grandeur without losing warmth. The former sanctuary was reimagined as “The Abbey,” the heart of the venue: soaring ceilings, dramatic lighting, and preserved architectural elements now coexist with luxurious finishes and contemporary styling. Across the corridor, the original dining hall was transformed into “The Hyde,” an intimate yet refined space designed for elevated gatherings, toasts, and memory-making moments.
From initial concept to final execution, I led the creative vision, working hand-in-hand with both the venue owner and the architecture firm to ensure that every design move honored the building’s original spirit while delivering a modern-day guest experience that felt effortless, intentional, and unforgettable. I immersed myself in material selections, spatial flow, lighting concepts, and storytelling elements—ensuring that each space had its own identity, yet contributed to a seamless overall journey.
The venue now boasts a thoughtfully curated collection of supporting spaces that elevate the experience from ordinary to extraordinary. The Bridal and Groom’s Suites are fully furnished retreats, designed with comfort and elegance in mind—providing moments of peace and anticipation before the celebration unfolds. The monochromatic lobby serves as a dramatic introduction, blending black-and-white tones that echo the property’s 1896 roots, while bold contemporary elements set the tone for what’s ahead. And outside, the versatile terrace offers a blank canvas under the sky—perfect for ceremonies, cocktail hours, or al fresco receptions beneath the stars.
This project was more than a renovation—it was a chance to curate a legacy, blending architecture, emotion, and functionality into a venue that doesn’t just host weddings—it elevates them into stories worth telling. The final result is a venue that honors the past, celebrates the present, and inspires the future, one unforgettable event at a time.
